Today, the children learnt about 'The Book of Kells' which was hand-written by monks in 800AD. The book was stolen be thieves as they wanted to steal the solid gold cover. However, the book was found in 1008AD with the cover missing. The Book of Kells is held in Dublin University and one of the 680 pages displayed to the public each day.

The children learnt about how the colours were hand-made by the monks and they also looked at their wonderful artwork. The children then created bookmarks, imitating the artwork in the illuminated manuscripts.

The children in year 5 were presented with a dilemma, Farmer Giles needed a new bridge in order to get to his flock of sheep in the field on the other side of the river.

The children were given a design specification and were then set a challenge to organise themselves into a group, design a bridge with the limited resources to hand, give themselves an individual responsibility in order to comlete their task by the deadline and finally build their bridges. Each groups bridge was marked according to the set of specifications and the winners were presented with...duh duh duuuuhhhhhh...a sticker!

Today we looked at different types of rocks and investigated their appearance when dry and wet, if they can be scratched, their textures, their uses and where they can be found.

During Eco-Day the children in year 5 planted potatoes for a whole school fruit and vegetable competition. The children have cared for the potatoes and here is the progress.

I think we may be in with a good chance of winning here Year 5.

Today we had a wonderful time at the Valley Theatre. We were introduced to the fairytale characters, wrote our own fairytales and then watched the actors/characters act out one of the fabulous fairtales that year 5 wrote.

For our Eco day, each class was set a challenge to grow a different fruit or vegetable. Year 5 planted potatoes and have ensured that they have been looked after well. It is now several weeks on and they have begun to sproat. Not long now and we'll be able to eat them. Yum!

Year 5 had a wonderful time at Chester Zoo on Friday which resulted in many wonderful photographs. During our day we visited the elephants, bat cave, penguins, lions, red pandas, tropical house, owls, butterfly house and many more animals.
